Flash News: Fairfax County Public Schools Closed Tuesday, Jan. 27

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia announced that all schools and central offices will be closed Tuesday, January 27, due to ongoing winter weather conditions.

Along with classes, all school-based activities are canceled, including:

  • Extracurricular activities and athletic events
  • Team practices and field trips
  • After-school programs and adult education classes
  • Community use of school facilities

Child care programs operated by the district are also closed.

FCPS said additional updates will be shared through official district channels.

Social voice

Parent response has been immediate and consistent. Many families are urging the district to call Wednesday now, citing solid ice on sidewalks, unplowed neighborhood streets, and unsafe conditions for walkers and buses. A frequent concern is not just driving, but children walking to bus stops and crossing icy intersections. While some parents appreciate the safety-first approach, others are asking for earlier decisions to help families plan, especially with a half day and student holidays already approaching.

What’s next

For now, the weather isn’t giving much clarity. Daytime temperatures in Fairfax County may creep up near freezing, but overnight lows are expected to stay well below freezing, which means anything that melts during the day is likely to freeze again by morning. That’s why families keep pointing to icy sidewalks, bus stops, and neighborhood streets — not just main roads — as the biggest challenge to reopening safely.

This kind of uncertainty isn’t new for FCPS. The district typically plans ahead for winter disruptions, building multiple snow days into the school calendar — including 11 designated snow days last school year. In heavier winters, multi-day closures have happened before, especially when ice lingers and cleanup takes time.

FCPS has indicated that additional updates will be shared through official district channels as conditions are reassessed.

At-home learning ideas while kids are home

With another day (or more) at home, many families are looking for learning activities that feel manageable, flexible, and low-stress — especially during weather disruptions.

In addition to playful early-learner materials like Jolly Math, which work especially well for cozy, at-home winter days, Think Academy also offers math worksheets organized by grade level, from Pre-K through middle school.

A few tips that work well during snow or ice days:

  • Keep math time short (10–20 minutes)
  • Pick one or two focused worksheets, not a full packet
  • Use worksheets as a routine anchor, then let kids return to play or rest

Grade-based worksheets make it easier for parents to adjust expectations while schools reassess reopening plans — offering just enough structure without added pressure.
