Dallas ISD Still Weighing Wednesday Reopening as Ice Persists
Dallas ISD announced Tuesday afternoon that it is still evaluating whether schools will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, citing ongoing concerns about road conditions across the district. While temperatures are expected to rise above freezing during the day, officials emphasized that neighborhood streets, overnight refreezing, and possible freezing fog remain key safety factors.
In its official update, the district said it is “carefully monitoring road conditions across the district to make a final determination,” and reiterated that student and staff safety remains the top priority.
Why it matters
Although major highways are improving, many residential streets remain heavily iced, directly affecting bus routes, early-morning commutes, and school drop-offs. Repeated freeze–thaw cycles and overnight temperature drops increase the risk of black ice and reduced visibility.
Social voice
Community response has been strong and mixed:
- Many parents report being unable to leave their neighborhoods, describing local roads as “ice rinks” and warning that buses would not be able to operate safely.
- A large number of families say they would not send children to school even if campuses reopen, citing overnight refreezing and freezing fog.
- Others express frustration from a working-parent perspective, calling for clearer decisions, delayed openings, or virtual learning alternatives.
- A recurring sentiment across comments: “Highways may be clear, but neighborhood streets aren’t.”
